Greater Mount Zion Pentecostal Church in Bluefield had the right idea by mixing end-of-summer fun with back-to-school prep.

The second annual Back-to-School Summerfest at Greater Mt. Zion Pentecostal Church has one ultimate purpose.

From children picking out free backpacks to adults receiving free blood pressure and glucose screenings, the Summerfest is meant to serve the community.

Bishop Timothy Schofield said it is a blessing.

“So, we’re here to minister to the young people, to the adults… We have plenty of food, we have different vendors here today and we just want to be a blessing to the community, pour back into the community, and make the community a better place.” said Bishop Schofield.

The vendors serving the community at the event included Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Bluefield State University, Bluefield University, and WVU Extension.

Bluefield University provided free blood pressure and glucose screenings for the adults in the community.

Children could also choose books from Craft Memorial Library or Camp Mariposa as well. Adults and children could also get a fresh haircut at Memphis Cutz’ mobile barbering truck.

Bishop Schofield reiterated that community is what these sorts of events are all about.

“Absolutely, the church is here for the community. If we’re not here for the community, we need to close our doors because that’s what the church’s purpose is, is to serve the community.” said Bishop Schofield.
