Despite much excitement and intrigue surrounding the program, and returning players at many key positions, West Virginia will enter the 2024 season unranked in the AP Top 25 poll, which was released Monday.

Georgia sits atop the country in the preseason poll, followed by Ohio State, Oregon, Texas and Alabama to round out the top 5. Utah is the highest-ranked team from the Big 12, checking in at No. 12.

WVU received 17 votes to be ranked. Iowa State received the most votes (33) of any Big 12 team that enters the year unranked. By way of votes received, the Mountaineers begin the year as the No. 33 team.

West Virginia went 9-4 last year, including a win over North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The Mountaineers finished the 2023 season ranked 25th in the Coaches Poll but unranked by the Associate Press.

Neal Brown’s team will face five teams ranked in this year’s AP Preseason Poll, starting with No. 8 Penn State on August 31. Other games against ranked teams include No. 22 Kansas in the Big 12 opener, No. 17 Oklahoma State, No. 18 Kansas State and No. 21 Arizona.

Albany, WVU’s lone FCS opponent, was ranked 14th in the FCS preseason coaches poll.
