FAIRLEA, WV (WVNS) – Brave fairgoers got the chance to get up close and personal with some creatures from the deep.

SeaLand Encounters is hosting a live Shark Show featuring two Nurse Sharks.

All of the sharks they work with are raised in captivity, and some of them (like Rosita, who was rescued from living in a bath tub,) were rescued from awful living conditions and rehabilitated.

Is the State Fair of West Virginia good for business?

The host of the show, Felipe Velarde, told 59News in his experience, sharks are a lot like dogs. If you show them love, for the most part, they will show it right back.

“There are some out there that bite more than others, but most of them just want some loving too. They really enjoy being pet, as crazy as that sounds,” said Velarde. “You’ll see in the show they come right up to me and I pet them like they’re my dogs and they really enjoy it.”

You can catch Felipe and the sharks three times a day, every day until the State Fair of West Virginia wraps up on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
