OAK HILL, WV (WVNS) — The first day of school can be exciting for students and parents alike.

Back-to-school dates announced for southern West Virginia

Capturing that moment to share with friends and family is also a long-standing tradition.

With social media platforms acting as some of the most popular places to share those back to school photos quickly, however, there may also be a risk. What can parents do to maintain their child’s safety online?

Corporal Korey Spears, the Prevention Resource Officer for the Oak Hill campus, said it is really all about common sense.

“You want to keep all personal information such as their full name, their age, their date of birth, what specific school that they go to [hidden]. If it’s something that you don’t want a random stranger to know, [don’t share it],” said Corporal Spears.

Corporal Spears said to keep the information you post as vague as possible if you decide to post these types of photos at all.
