FAIRLEA, WV (WVNS) – State Fair week is one of the biggest weeks of the year for the Department of Agriculture.

Project Healing Waters hopes to bring more veterans to their program

Not only does the fair celebrate the award winning animals and plants, they also spread the word about all of the great work people do in making sure food stays fresh from the farm, to the grocery store, and even to your dinner table.

The director of the department’s regulatory division explained the message they are spreading at the state fair.

“I think the biggest thing is just the education piece of it,” said Dr. Carrie Summers. “Trying to educate individuals as to what the Department of Agriculture is about and what we have to offer to the citizens here in West Virginia.”

People may not realize all the Department of Agriculture does, but they are involved in everything from dairy, to hemp, to pet food, and even to testing foods in high-tech labs.

All this work goes into making sure the food you put in your belly is 100% safe to eat.
