BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — A federal judge has granted preliminary approval of a $4 million class action lawsuit settlement with the State of West Virginia filed by inmates against Southern Regional Jail.

One of the attorneys representing the inmates, Stephen New, said a website was established during the week of August 12, 2024 for claimants.

Those who were inmates at Southern Regional Jail from September 22, 2020 up to July 19, 2024 may register for the settlement which will be disbursed once legal and attorneys’ fees are taken out of the settlement, according to New.

Claimants may visit www.wvsrjsettlement.com to file claims according to New. They may also call 1-888-398-7011.

“It’s a very easy process,” New said, stating that around 1,200 inmates had already filed claims and that about 7,700 more are eligible.

New said that Prime Care Medical and the now-bankrupt Prime Care Medical WV are also named in the class action lawsuit and that damages against the companies are still being pursued.

59News reached out to Prime Care Medical, but they have not responded to requests for comment as this is pending litigation.
