Crisp fall air moves in bringing no shot at rain this week raising fire dangers

    By Bradley Wells,

Tuesday morning will be mostly cloudy but high pressure from Canada is expected to move south helping us clear up through the day. North wind really put a hurt on temps as we struggle our way to just below the 70 mark in Beckley. A few ridgeline and mountain top communities towards the east will be lucky to reach the 60s. Snowshoe, for example, will only manage the upper 50s for an afternoon high!

Tuesday night will be a down-right cold night per August standards. Most in the lowlands and urban areas drop back into the low to mid 40s. The risk here is for sheltered valleys and folks in an elevation above 2,500 feet like Pocahontas & Greenbrier county who drop into the upper 30s. Patchy frost early into the predawn hours of Wednesday is a safe bet. For gardeners who wish to avoid crop damage, taking precautions before hand will go a long way. We do warm up towards the end of the week so our growing season isn’t over just yet.

Wednesday a very cold start but with sunshine aplenty, we slowly warm up through the morning with afternoon highs in the low 70s. With northeast winds in control, it’ll feel much more like October than the middle of August. Another chilly night with lows expected to reach the mid 40s once again.

Thursday, with high pressure moving towards the east, we’ll start to change our wind direction to help warm us up with the 60s by lunchtime. Feel much closer to August averages, highs for the day manage to rebound into the upper 70s. A few fair weather clouds to add variety to the sky, but no rain to speak off which only worsens our drought. This is the kind of weather where fire dangers start to climb to worrisome levels. If you don’t have to burn, wait until we receive some rain. If you do have too, check with local officials on restrictions and use caution.

Friday we bring in some humidity and winds from the west-southwest to really help us warm up. It’ll certainly feel more like August as highs reach into the low 80s. Mostly sunny skies with only a handful of clouds at times throughout the day.

Saturday we bring the humidity and thermometers up as a nice warm up unfolds across the two-Virginia’s. Highs in the mid 80s under mostly sunny skies really give us that summer feel we’ve missed out on so often this year.

Sunday a few more clouds in the mix but nothing that will hurt temps or bring any relief to the drought. Highs push into the mid 80s with a few spots west of Beckley making a solid run at the 90 degree mark. What a change from the beginning of the week!

Monday has a mostly sunny morning but increasing clouds for the afternoon. Heat and humidity pop-up showers are possible but we’ll have to wait until Tuesday for any beneficial rains. Highs push into the upper 80s with more western towns hitting that 90 degree mark.

In your extended forecast, our first real taste of fall behind us, we’re making up for lost time in summer as the heat and humidity are back for an extended stay. Temps remain above average (80 degrees in Beckley) for quite some time. Pop up showers and storms from time to time only tease drought relief as no real long running beneficial rains look likely through the end of August.
