BLUEFIELD, VA (WVNS) — The Bluefield Virginia Police Department announced the introduction of photo enforced school zones as children go back to school.

Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers about school zone laws

According to posts on the Bluefield Virginia Police Department’s Facebook page, automated speed enforcement will be carried out in their designated school zones. The safety program is meant to help people slow down when traveling through school zones and reduce the risk of an accident occurring.

Speed indicators, flashing lights, warning signs, and photo enforcement devices will be included in the speed enforcement as a way to remind drivers to drive safely in school zones.

The Bluefield Virginia Police Department stated that since the school year started on August 15, 2024, warnings will be given out to people who speed in school zones when students are at school and flashing lights are on for the first 30 days.

According to the Bluefield Virginia Police Department, those who do not follow school zone speed limits when lights are flashing will get the warnings in the mail. They also stated that the warnings will not have a fine, and that they are intended to remind drivers to be careful and obey speed limits in school zones.

The Facebook post from the Bluefield Virginia Police Department stated that once the first 30 days ended live enforcement through summonses would begin, and that the summonses are civil in nature and come with a fine, however they will not involve insurance penalties or points against a person’s license.
