The return of August heat & humidity doesn’t bode well for our drought conditions

Monday will be a little warmer than the weekend as we push into the upper 80s by this afternoon. A touch of humidity won’t be terrible but certainly noticeable towards the late afternoon and evening. A few clouds try to filter in but they won’t provide much relief from the heat or the drought. A stray sprinkle for eastern Pocahontas and northeastern Greenbrier county is possible but we’ll have to be very lucky to see them.

Tonight a fiery sunset with the high level clouds can be expected and with temps hovering the 80 degree mark, a warm evening to enjoy the stunning colors. By midnight we’ll be in the low 70s with lows dipping back into the low to mid 60s as we get our Tuesday underway.

Tuesday a heat dome is expected to slide eastwards bringing in more heat and humidity. Temps rise quickly after sunrise with the 80s expected by midday. We’ll warm up even more into the afternoon under partly sunny skies into the low 90s.

With the extra humidity, heat indexes will make the day feel warmer in the low to mid 90s by the late afternoon. Fire dangers will be running high as will heat exhaustion risks. Overnight lows tumble back slowly into the mid and upper 60s by Wednesday morning.

Wednesday will see a fair bit more clouds filtering in at times but nothing is going to stop the warm up. Temps soar into the 90s for the afternoon with heat index values towards the west in the mid and upper 90s. A pesky system rides the dome of warm air and with any luck a few showers and afternoon rumbles try to filter in. They look to weaken approaching our region so don’t get your hopes up on these guys producing meaningful rainfall totals or relief from the heat. Overnight lows inch closer to the low 70s with the extra cloud cover.

Thursday a few morning showers for the eastern mountains may give pause to some heading to the bus stop. With clouds breaking up in the late morning, afternoon sunshine will push temps into the low 90s once again. A stray rumble of thunder for the late afternoon in a hit and miss fashion is possible, but not widespread enough that only a few towns will see them.

Friday a mostly sunny morning will give way to clouds building for the afternoon. A cold front is expected to march towards us through the day but until it crosses our region, only a few scattered showers in the afternoon look likely. Not enough to help with the heat as we once again push into the low 90s. Rains become steadier into the overnight as our cold front nudges our western counties.

Saturday with our cold front expected to cross midday, scattered showers will be a safe bet. Heavy downpours and thunderstorms will be the norm for the afternoon as westerly winds push in cooler air. Winds push 15-20mph at times which will help push our cold front through quickly. Highs for the day struggle into the low to mid 80s with extra clouds and showers. Cooler air is expected overnight with lows in the upper 50s and low 60s.

Sunday morning showers give way to a few breaks before afternoon pop-up showers and isolated rumble of thunder roll through. Many will have several dry hours to get some errands done but long duration outdoor projects may get interrupted a few times with heavy downpours from time to time. Highs are cooler still in the upper 70s and low 80s.

In your extended forecast the wobble in our jet stream over the next 10-14 days keeps things interesting with temperatures bouncing from very mild upper 80s and low 90s to the more seasonable upper 70s and low 80s. A few systems bring scattered showers from time to time, but none of them will help solve our drought conditions only expected to worsen with the next update on Thursday.
