LEWISBURG, WV (WVNS) — The Greenbrier Humane Society remains at full capacity once again.

According to a press release from the Greenbrier Humane Society, the kennels at the shelter are full once again. Members of the shelter stated that although they have tried to manage the large amount of animals, being at full capacity will require them to pause taking in new animals to be able to ensure care for the ones already at the humane society.

Intake policy at Greenbrier Humane Society temporarily changed due to being at full capacity

The press release from the humane society stated that while changing situations regarding intakes eased the strain on the shelter’s resources temporarily, the shelter still reached full capacity yet again.

We are deeply committed to finding loving homes for every animal that comes through our doors. Our small but dedicated team is working tirelessly to ensure each animal receives proper care and veterinary attention. However, our capacity is a limiting factor in how effectively we can meet this commitment.

Some tips from the Greenbrier Humane Society for what to do in the meantime include:

    • Holding a stray for a 7-day stray hold while attempts to find the owner are made by pictures of the animal being posted to the humane society’s Facebook page. Having someone hold the stray will help limit the number of animals at the shelter as they try to find homes for the animals.
    • People who want to surrender their pets are welcome to get involved with the Responsible Pet Rehoming Program at the shelter. The program helps use social media to find homes for pets, without the animals needing to stay at the shelter longer than necessary.
    • People are encouraged to foster dogs or cats from the shelter. Those who do become fosters will be given the supplies that they will need, and will help get an animal out of the shelter, even temporarily, while they are at full capacity.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of our community as we navigate this challenging period. Your support, whether through fostering, rehoming, or holding onto stray animals, plays a crucial role in helping us continue our mission. We are grateful for every bit of assistance and are hopeful for a resolution that allows us to once again accommodate all animals in need.
