MEADOW BRIDGE, WV (WVNS) – Over the years, there have been more actions taken to ensure high school athletes’ safety – especially in extreme heat.

One way the problem of heat is being addressed is by the care provided to marching bands.

When they take the field to march at football games or in their competitions, they normally wear hot and stuffy band uniforms.

That is why one local high school band is making some changes to how they are marching Friday, August 30, amid high temperatures.

“They are going to wear their band shirt. The color guard is going to wear their dress uniform or dresses, which is a lot cooler. You know, safety first and music second,” said Meadow Bridge Regional School Band Director, Dr. Travis Riddle.

Temperatures are projected to be up in the 90s when the band takes to the field in Boone County on Friday, August 30.

Dr. Riddle also emphasized how physically demanding marching band really is. He said between the marching, the heat, and the weight of the instruments, it can get physically taxing quickly.
