The Greenbrier announces “no interruptions” in employee healthcare coverage

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WVNS) — In a statement from The Greenbrier, employee health benefits will continue for the foreseeable future.

The announcement from America’s Resort comes after employees were sent a letter in August that laid out the potential loss of their health and welfare coverage.

    The statement read as follows:

The Greenbrier proudly announces there will be no interruptions in healthcare coverage for any of the hundreds of hard-working union employees and their families.

The employee contributions that were withheld from employees’ paychecks were always timely remitted to the Health Fund, and not a single time was a penny of those contributions used for any purpose other than funding the healthcare coverage of The Greenbrier employees. The Greenbrier values its employees greatly, and from the very beginning, when Governor Justice bought the resort out of bankruptcy, he immediately (within hours) restored benefits that employees had been forced to negotiate away.

A union contract that took 6 months to negotiate with CSX (prior to the Justice purchase) and obtained substantial concessions from the employees — including stripping away, and in many cases completely removing, health benefits to these hard-working employees — was replaced by the Justice family as its first priority. The Greenbrier cares about its team members as part of the family, and these great people take world-class care of guests from around the world. They are an essential part of The Greenbrier experience and make us proud every day.

Initially, a letter had been sent to employees from Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP who represents the Amalgamated National Health Fund, otherwise known as the Health Fund. The notice said The Greenbrier Hotel Corporation was four months behind in “contributions” to the Health Fund. The four months of delinquent contributions equals $2.4 million, according to the notice sent to employees.

Employee healthcare coverage was set to expire on August 27, 2024, before an extension was implemented to give until the 31st of August. This comes after Governor Jim Justice assured employees that their benefits would indeed continue during a press briefing.
