BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Tamarack in Beckley was open on Monday, September 2, 2024, welcoming folks to visit the West Virginia Swing outside and to stop inside for food and shopping.

Lisa Wilson of South Carolina said she was headed to Niagara Falls at the Canadian border on a tour bus and had recently crossed the East River Tunnel from Virginia to Bluefield, W.Va.

“You know what? It’s been great,” said Wilson. “The tunnel you go through, where you cross the state, that was pretty neat. Who knew? There’s only one other, we learned that on the way, there’s only one other border between two states with a tunnel.”

A new sport is coming to southern West Virginia

Cumberland Gap Tunnel the second mountainous vehicular tunnel, allows traffic to flow between Kentucky and Tennessee.

Charleston native Jennifer Simms said she had come home to cheer on the Mountaineers in one of their weekend games and was headed home to North Carolina on Labor Day.

“I flew in, so that was fine. Flights were delayed going back,” said Simms. “So, I said, ‘I’m just going to drive. I’m driving home.’ So I was like, ‘That means I get to stop at Tamarack.'”

Simms left a parting message before getting on the road.

“Let’s win next week,” she said.

For those worrying about the price of travel during the holiday weekend, a couple from Dublin, Ohio, dropped in on their way home from a visit to Appalachian University to bring good news.

Schon Hughes and Patty Hughes said gas prices in West Virginia were about the same as everywhere else, and they said state roads are in good shape.

“The roads are good,” said Schon Hughes. “The tolls need to come down a little bit.”

“If they could come down just a tad, we’d be happy,” said Patty.
