According to a press release from New River Community and Technical College, the Invitational will be from January 6, 2025 to January 11, 2025 at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. Representatives with the tournament said the invitational is crucial for college recruiting, fundraising, community outreach, and bringing basketball teams from around the state for an exciting week of competition.

The first ever college game will also be played as part of the invitational. The West Virginia Tech Golden Bears Men’s Basketball team will take on the Indiana University East Red Wolves in a River States Conference game.

“We are excited to expand our partnership with the West Virginia University system. We recently finalized several articulation agreements that provide guaranteed transfer opportunities for our students, and it only made sense to include the WVU Tech Golden Bears in this year’s signature event,” said Michael Green, Vice President of External Affairs and Tournament Director.

New River CTC Foundation will award more than $200,000 in scholarships this year, which will contribute to education and academic success. Fundraising is a big part of this success for New River CTC students. The funds raised through the New River CTC Invitational and other events will help students who want to pursue their education when they are not able to.

“The New River CTC Invitational has become the cornerstone event for the college and the surrounding communities. It’s more than just a basketball tournament; it’s a celebration of teamwork, dedication, and community. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to directly impact the lives of our students through scholarships and educational support,” said Green.

The event will also benefit high schools’ athletic departments and Project Graduation committees by awarding $1,000 to the “Most Outstanding Cheering Section,” during the tournament. The tournament will also help economically boost the city of Beckley and other areas by bringing in visitors and other partnerships. This also gives local businesses and other organizations the chance to be sponsors for the tournament.
