A taste of summer Friday before another fall feels weekend rushes in

Thursday night will be a stunning sunset kind of night with a few high level wispy clouds bouncing the colors all across the sky. After which temps slowly sink back through the 60s for a very comfortable evening. Great sleeping weather continues with overnight lows in the low to mid 50s.

#LookUp: Celestial Events Happening This September

Friday sunshine gives way to a few extra clouds as the day gets going with a cold front towards our west and westerly winds. High level clouds won’t hurt temps too badly as we push into the mid and upper 70s. A touch more humidity won’t be immediately noticeable except by those exercising or working outdoors. By the afternoon a stray shower in an isolated, hit and miss variety towards the eastern mountains is possible, but not enough to help with the drought. Clouds remain stubborn overnight keeping temps in the mid to upper 50s for lows.

August Recap: Another dry month spells trouble for fall harvests

Saturday mostly cloudy skies with a few scattered showers by late morning and early afternoon as a cold front slide west to east. A bit breezy at times with westerly winds 10-15mph. Showers will be highly scattered most of the day with the exception of the evening hours when a line of showers scoots across the region. Several dry hours are expected until then, however. Highs struggle a bit with the extra clouds remaining in the low 70s.

Sunday we slowly start to clear up the skies as sunshine returns. Breezy with northwesterly winds 10-15mph usher in cooler air once again. Many of us will struggle into the upper 60s for afternoon highs. Mountains will be rather cool through the day with highs in the low to mid 60s. Overnight lows dip back into the upper 40s with patchy frost possible for the highest elevations in Pocahontas County.

Monday morning will be a chilly start but with plenty of sunshine we’ll warm up slowly into the low 70s by the afternoon. Mountains will struggle a bit in the upper 60s but a beautifully cool and comfortable day can be expected.

Tuesday is a carbon copy of Monday with sunshine and temps warming up after a cool morning into the low to mid 70s. This time more of the eastern half of our viewing area will nudge the 70 degree mark. Still below average, but a nice turn from the cool weekend we had.

In your extended forecast, the peak of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season is just around the corner on September 10th. The active tropics with 3 storm systems being watched closely could bring changes to our long range forecasts but for now, a relatively cooler September is still looking promising. For our region, September is typically a dry month based on rainfall averages, but tropical systems have been known to sweep through with heavy rain. Something to watch for this month.
