True fall-like feel arrives this weekend, not much rain ahead

    By Joe Fitzwater,

Tonight features an increase in cloud cover but we’ll remain dry before midnight for high school football games. Speaking of, if you plan on heading to area games in our region, kickoff temperatures will be warm but comfy in the upper 70s cooling to the low 60s by the end of area games – just cool enough to consider a jacket by game’s end – we know how chilly those metal bleachers get! After midnight, a few showers will be possible from west to east, primarily as we head toward dawn with a cold front sliding through with low temperatures in the mid 50s.

Saturday features a few showers to begin our day with mostly cloudy conditions as our front passes by. We’ll see the skies begin to clear slowly but surely during the afternoon but the big headliner for this weekend will be the true fall-like feel behind our front with high temperatures on Saturday only in the mid 60s with a cool northerly breeze kicking in. Overnight Saturday into Sunday will feature a good shot at frost for our mountain spots above 3500 feet, with low temperatures even in the lowlands dropping down to around 40 degrees – it’ll be the coldest night we’ve seen in several months.

Sunday begins a very dry stretch once again – not good news on the drought front or the approaching fall fire season – as high pressure dominates our weather. We’ll have hardly a cloud in the sky and though it’s a downright cold start to the day, temperatures will rebound nicely, with highs jumping up into the upper 60s. We’ll have one more very chilly night Sunday night where frost will be possible again in mountain spots above 3500 feet, as we’ll see low temperatures in the low 40s in the lowlands.

Monday sees our high pressure system nearly directly overhead and eventually scooting to our east, and that will invite a southeast breeze to kick in. We’ll see plenty of sunshine and temperatures will rebound to near normal conditions, with highs in the mid 70s.

Tuesday continues our warming trend, with our southeast flow allowing temperatures to rebound to around 80 degrees for highs – that’ll be the first day we’ve reached 80 degrees since today, so this will be a cool stretch of weather between now and then, as fall and its cooler weather inevitably approaches.

Wednesday is still dry with high pressure in control. Plenty of sunshine with just a few fair-weather cumulus clouds will allow high temperatures to jump into the low 80s.

Thursday will be the apex of the heat ahead over the next couple of weeks, with partly sunny skies and high temperatures reaching the low 80s.

Drought conditions are putting pressure on farmers across the state

Friday finally sees at least a chance for a couple of showers, with the potential for a low pressure system to be off the coast of the Atlantic. There will be fine-tuning with this over the next couple of days, but depending on the track of the low, we could see some rain – let’s hope for that! High temperatures on Friday will be near 80 degrees.

Looking ahead in your extended forecast, we’ll be watching the potential development of a low pressure system move along the Atlantic coast. If this occurs, we’d at least be looking at chances for showers. We’re still a long way from this time frame though, and any changes in the track of a system like this has big implications on risk for rain, so we’ll monitor this. High pressure looking to return by Sunday afternoon into Monday with high temperatures generally near average in the mid to upper 70s.
