    Alerts Issued for Our Region

    • FROST ADVISORY is in effect tonight from 2 AM to 9 AM Monday for Greenbrier, Pocahontas, southeastern Nicholas and Monroe counties. Patchy frost could damage sensitive plants. Bring them inside or cover them up to protect them!

Tonight features mostly clear skies, which will allow temperatures to plummet tonight, as we’ll see our lows back down into the 30s in the mountains and low 40s in the lowlands. Patchy instances of frost are a good bet in the high country above 3,000 feet, hence why frost advisories have been issued for the overnight. It’s a fall-like night and quiet otherwise, but if you’re in the mountains, bring the sensitive plants inside or cover them up to protect them from being damaged by the cold.

Monday sees our high pressure system nearly directly overhead. With just a few fair-weather cumulus clouds, we’ll see temperatures bump back up into the mid 70s with plenty of sun. It’s another chilly Monday night, but not enough for even our mountain spots to be concerned about frost, with low temperatures in the mid to upper 40s.

Tuesday continues our warming trend, with a calm wind becoming a light southeast flow allowing temperatures to rebound to around 80 degrees for highs – that’ll be the first day we’ve reached 80 degrees since Friday! Mostly sunny skies with hardly a cloud in the sky is expected.

Wednesday is still dry with high pressure in control and this is the day where we will reach the apex of the heat in the region this week. Plenty of sunshine with just a few fair-weather cumulus clouds will allow high temperatures to jump into the low to mid 80s.

Thursday will see partly sunny skies as a low pressure system off the Gulf Coast moves inland with a trough extending out from the system. We will stay dry but this will impact the warm environment that our area of high pressure over the previous two days will have built and keep temperatures slightly cooler, with highs near 80.

    How does drought affect groundwater?

Friday finally sees at least a chance for a couple of showers, with the aforementioned Gulf Coast system moving farther inland. This system at this point looks to provide nothing more than a few light showers, but it’s better than nothing! We’ll see partly sunny skies with a few showers and highs in the mid 70s.

Saturday continues the risk for a few isolated showers as the low pressure system moves into the Ohio River Valley, significantly weakening as it does so. There does not appear to be any reason to cancel any outside plans at this time, as we’re looking at just a few showers amongst partly sunny skies and highs in the mid 70s.

Sunday provides the risk for a couple of lingering showers in the morning with plenty of sunshine for the afternoon, with highs returning to near 80 degrees.

Looking ahead in your extended forecast, it’s the same song and dance we’ve been talking about all summer: warm and dry. Monday could provide a stray sprinkle with a system nearby but otherwise, we look dry Tuesday and Wednesday with high temperatures slightly above average in the upper 70s to right around 80 degrees. With the upcoming fall fire season quickly approaching, this dry pattern is certainly not good news…
