    Rise in road work raises concerns about workers safety

    BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – The lives of road workers are in the hands of those behind the wheels. Distracted driving is the main cause for crashes and accidents in these areas, according to The Associated General Contractors of America.

    64 percent of highway contractors reported work zone crashes over the last year.
    Distracted driving can include being on your phone, eating food or not being aware of your surrundings.

    The Secretary of the Department of Transportation, says he wants to share those West Virginia values when on the road.

    “We’ve got to make good decisions when we when we start those cars. So let’s let’s do that and let’s protect each other. Let’s the show our West Virginia values and how much we appreciate each other,” said Jimmy Wriston, Secretary of the Department of Transportation.

    Turning off your phone is one of the easiest ways to avoid distracted driving. As well as keeping all of your attention on the roads at all times.
