Pitt is rolling and seeks revenge. West Virginia is looking to sustain momentum after it found its footing last week. The Backyard Brawl is almost here, and all signs are pointing toward it being a slugfest in the Steel City.

Here is everything you need to know ahead of the 107th meeting between WVU and Pitt on the gridiron.

WVU football at Pitt matchup preview

The Panthers have a steady lead in the all-time series, but since the rivalry was renewed in 2022, both teams have a win and a loss to their names.

WVU won a gritty 17-6 game last fall with backup quarterback Nicco Marchiol after Garrett Greene left the game in the first quarter with an injury. The Mountaineers forced three interceptions and did not allow any points in the second half. Pitt also generated just 81 passing yards in the game.

This season, Pitt is playing like a completely different team to start the year. The Panthers are 2-0, and their offensive attack, led by Eli Holstein at quarterback and Desmond Reid at running back, is averaging 41.5 points per game through two weeks.

Holstein, a redshirt freshman who transferred to Pitt from Alabama, threw for over 300 yards with three touchdown passes in both of Pitt’s first two games. He threw all three of his touchdowns against Cincinnati in the second half of the game on three consecutive drives to help complete Pitt’s 21-point comeback win over the Bearcats on the road.

One of those touchdowns was a 56-yard scoring completion to Reid, who is dominating in multiple facets to start the year. The junior Western Carolina transfer logged 145 yards on the ground against Kent State and another 256 all-purpose yards against Cincinnati. He is averaging 8.9 yards per carry.

If all goes well for WVU, Greene will get his first full Backyard Brawl experience as a starter Saturday afternoon. He settled in nicely against UAlbany last weekend, completing 17 of his 23 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns after a shaky performance in the season-opening loss to Penn State.
