SALT SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WVNS) — A former resort has been listed for sale by Foxfire Realty for $1,795,000.

The Salt Sulphur Springs resort, listed on the National Register for Historic Places, is a complex that has potential as a tourist attraction, according to David Sibray, an agent and preservation consultant.

Given the growth of the travel industry in West Virginia, we expect much interest in the resort as a historical attraction, though it could remain chiefly residential, as it has for many years.

The resort is the most well-preserved of many in the region that attracted visitors of wealth in the era before the American Civil War. Nearby resorts similar to it include in the town of White Sulphur Springs, where the Greenbrier Resort is located, as well as Blue Sulphur Springs.

In the early years of the 19th century, wealthy travelers went about visiting the springs in the area to take part in the supposedly medicinal waters. Agent Randy S. Burdette joins Sibray in focusing on the area’s history to speak to a different audience.

Mr. Burdette has been burrowing into the Civil War period and the lore surrounding its mineral waters.

The pair recently found owners for the Itmann Company Store, known as the “Castle of the Coalfields” in Wyoming County, as well as the Tyree Tavern in Ansted. Both locations are in the process of becoming historical tourist attractions.

We don’t only sell properties with tourism potential, but the fact is that there’s a market for historic properties in West Virginia given the growth of the travel industry and the advent of the remote-work revolution.
