COAL CITY, WV (WVNS) – September 11th, 2001, a day that will live in infamy for many Americans.

In just under 24 hours, thousands of Americans lost their lives. This includes hundreds of first responders who braved the unthinkable to try and save those people.

On the evening of September 11th, 2024, local first responders in southern West Virginia honored those people.

We started in 2002. Mark Stiefer, the chief of Sophia City Fire Department, myself with Best Ambulance wanted to do a memorial to remember our fallen brother and sisters”

The 9/11 Parade of Lights started humbly enough with just a few vehicles 23 years ago.

Over the years, it has grown to dozens of vehicles, including more first responders, across southern West Virginia.

For those taking part, it is much more than a parade. It is remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

It makes you realize that there’s more people out there that see the same thing as we’ve done and want to be a part of it, it’s a good thing to keep growing. It’s something that affected this country in a way that’s never happened before.”

Chief Mark Stiefer with the Sophia City Fire Department

Even on its 23rd year, support only continues to grow. The parade now incorporates volunteers from all generations and walks of life.

Even here in West Virginia, people will only continue to remember those who died on that day.

We so close in a lot of ways and I don’t think people give us the recognition that we’re always out helping one another. Just to support our friends and family and fellow police, fire, and EMS to come together it doesn’t surprise me one bit.”
