The Rivalry Series: The history of The Backyard Brawl

In over 130 years of football at West Virginia University, the Mountaineers have had their share of foes…from scuffles with Syracuse to vitriol with Virginia Tech. But in the Mountain State and Western Pennsylvania, one rivalry reigns supreme. The blood feud of the Monongahela River, the Backyard Brawl.

The Brawl has seen it all from the first-ever college football radio broadcast in 1921, major bowl game robberies, an Olympic gold medalist score a touchdown, offensive-led blowouts and defensive-led rock fights.
