Friday the 13th: An ink-credible time for a tattoo

PRINCETON, WV (WVNS) – When you think of Friday the 13th, you may think of the famous horror movie from the 80’s or maybe the superstitions that come with the day.

For those who enjoy getting some ink, it is a very special day.

Tattoo shops often run ‘specials’ for Friday the 13th. The ‘flat sheet’ rates are pre-made designs that customers can choose from.

Custom Dreams Tattooing is just one of the Mountain State shops that take advantage of this special day.

“Each year’s a little different. The first year we did it, we had a line completely down the road and people waiting at the door,” said shop owner, Michael Bee.

Why do shops hold these discounted prices?

Legend says that getting a tattoo on Friday the 13th is actually good luck. The belief comes from the tale of a sailor who once got the number 13 tattooed on himself.

He believed that if bad luck ever came for him, it would ignore him because of his tattoo. Bee agrees that Friday the 13th is pretty lucky.

“Historically speaking, Friday the 13th isn’t really a bad lucky day. Tattoos to a certain extent tell people a story of their lives. Where they’ve been and what they’ve done.”

Custom Dreams Tattooing’s special consisted of small black tattoos for $13 and $7 gratuity, and larger, colored tattoos for $31 dollars and $9 gratuity.

For a lot of customers, the tradition has become a part of their life as they take advantage of the opportunity to get more tattoos.
