MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Two disappointed programs meet in Morgantown this weekend after heartbreaking losses in Week 3.

West Virginia and Kansas have both failed to meet expectations through nonconference play, but a win at Milan Puskar Stadium Saturday could set either program back on the right track for the rest of Big 12 action.

Here is everything you need to know ahead WVU’s first Big 12 battle of the season.

WVU football vs. Kansas matchup preview

Kansas began its season with a dominant, 48-3 win over Lindenwood, which is an FCS program.

Heading into Week 4, the Jayhawks have still not beaten an FBS program this year after they fumbled two fourth-quarter leads in losses to Illinois and UNLV in Week 2 and Week 3.

In similar fashion to WVU quarterback Garrett Greene, Kansas slinger Jalon Daniels is struggling to find his footing in 2024 after being named to several preseason watch lists. Daniels, who missed most of the 2023 season with a back injury, has thrown twice as many interceptions (six) as he has thrown touchdowns (three), and his completion percentage currently sits at 54.9% through three games.

He is finding success on the ground, though, with two rushing touchdowns (both against UNLV) and 4.8 yards per carry on the season.

The running game is where the Kansas offense excelled in its first three games, primarily with running back Devin Neal. The senior is averaging 9.7 yards per carry and 111.0 yards per game with a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Defensively, the Jayhawks are holding their own, at least on the stat sheet. They are one of nine Big 12 teams to be allowing fewer than 20 points per game, and they allowed 23 points in each of their two losses.

For comparison, only three Big 12 teams, including conference-champion Texas, allowed fewer than 23 points per game last season.

WVU also enters Big 12 play with a 1-2 record. This is the second year of the Neal Brown era in which WVU has started 1-2, and it marks the first time since 2003 that WVU will have a losing record in the nonconference portion of the regular season.

The Mountaineers are sporting the No. 8 scoring offense (31.7 points per game) and the second-worst scoring defense (28.7 points per game) in the Big 12.
