Students charged after making false threats towards local high school

MCDOWELL COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — Charges were filed against two minors in McDowell County for making threats towards a local high school.

According to a press release, members of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office were informed about active shooter threats towards River View High School located in the Bradshaw area of McDowell County on September 12, 2024 and September 13, 2024.

An investigation revealed that two students at River View High School made false social media threats towards the school. According to the press release, the names of the students involved will not be released due to their ages.

Charges were filed against the minors on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, and include: For Threats of Terrorist Acts to wit: Conveying False Information Concerning Terrorist Acts and Committing Terrorist Hoaxes, Felony Conspiracy, and Willful Disruption of a Governmental Process.

The McDowell County Board of Education and the McDowell County Prosecutor’s Office were informed about the false threats, and join the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office in taking threats of violence against schools seriously.

According to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office, the McDowell County Board of Education, and the McDowell County Prosecutor’s Office will prosecute those who make threats, no matter if the threats are false or real.

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office advised family members to talk to their children about what could happen if they spread fear on social media.
