BEAVER, WV (WVNS) – El Mariachi Restaurant and Cantina is a family owned restaurant nestled in the Appalachian Mountains.

Locals love the food, frequently gathering at the restaurant for celebrations, but what is behind this amazing atmosphere and delicious food? What goes into an establishment like El Mariachi?

Owner Jose Rizo takes pride not only in his food, but also in cultivating an authentic experience.

As of 2024, Rizo has been in the food business for around 30 years.  Blood, sweat, and tears are poured into his work to bring a taste of Mexico all the way to West Virginia.

“When you think of a Mexican restaurant you think of joy, you think of happiness. I think people enjoy the atmosphere, the music. It’s always kind of upbeat. I think it’s almost like a celebratory thing,” said Rizo.

The food is a reflection of Hispanic Culture in itself according to Rizo. It boasts bright colors and even more powerful flavors. The art of preparing the food with friends and family is also part of the experience.

Family recipes are prevalent in Hispanic culture, many of them being passed down by word of mouth rather than by being written.

“[We pass things down] with our music and with the food and just the whole vibe of the Hispanic culture, the fun, the family oriented culture. So, I think it’s definitely important for people to know a little bit about Hispanic culture,” said Rizo.

Rizo says being family orientated is a huge part of Hispanic and Latin cultures.

He says that is something Hispanic cultures share with the people of the Mountain State and why he decided to call West Virginia home for so long.

“I think what I enjoy about West Virginia is that people help each other. Like I said, it’s a tight knit, small community, so you have a lot more support, a lot more friends. So, it’s just a great atmosphere to live. It’s a great area to live in,” said Rizo.

Rizo said he hopes to continue to provide authentic, delicious, and memorable food for visitors, providing them with a taste of Hispanic culture.
