Last best chance of rain moves in Thursday afternoon before a sunny weekend ahead
By Bradley Wells,

Thursday our coastal system continues to push away towards New England and with it the bulk of the rain it had to share with our region. The plus side is northeast winds today will stir up our atmosphere a bit helping a few downpours and isolated thunderstorms form for the afternoon.
Hit and miss variety that don’t last very long when they do form but a quick half to three quarters of an inch of rain with them will certainly be welcomed. Temps will over in the low to mid 70s for those that see these showers while the upper 70s to low 80s are expected for those that don’t see the showers.
Tonight, high pressure, drier air, and calm winds will help temps cool back into the 50s for overnight lows and fog, dense in place, to form for overnight travelers.
Friday a foggy and damp morning breaks away with plenty of sunshine for the day. Temperatures work their way out of the 50s to the low 80s for the afternoon rather quickly.
A few clouds from time to time as we kick out the last bits of our coastal storm from the last few days. A stray shower for the extreme eastern side of our viewing area is possible with a better chance for folks along the I-81 corridor through Covington, VA and points east.
Otherwise, a comfy evening with temps dropping in to the 60s for many of our late night football games with lows dipping back into the 50s for pre-dawn Saturday morning.
Saturday is looking great for most with the exception being the extreme eastern edge of our viewing area in the mountains. Drizzle is possible, but not highly likely, as clouds remain stubborn along the I-81 corridor through Virginia. For most of our region, sunshine rules the day with temps pushing into the low 80s.
Sunday a mostly sunny day welcomes in the Fall Season at 8:43am with a crisp morning but temps rise quickly into the low 80s for our western counties, upper 70s for our eastern mountains. Into the evening, a quick light shower is possible for the eastern ridgelines but not highly probable. Overall, Sunday is looking great for a walk through one of our state parks for leaf-peepin’ adventures to get you in the fall spirit.
Monday clouds will be on the increase throughout the day as our next system is set to move in late into Tuesday. As clouds build and humidity rises, a stray shower is possible from time to time but most of us will have to wait until Tuesday morning for a solid shot at rain. Temps still manage to push the mid to upper 70s with the extra clouds with a select few from Beckley and points west to nudge the 80 degree mark. Into the evening, rain chances increase in scattered fashion as we wait for better chances into Tuesday.
Tuesday a cold front is expected to take the long way through the region which will be music to the ears of our forestry divisions battling brushfires across the two Virginias. Steady rain is expected throughout the day with some heavier downpours expected into the afternoon and evening. Winds will pick up westerly 10-15mph with some on the ridgelines seeing gusts upwards of 20-25mph. Overall, rainfall totals could be higher to really put a dent in the drought but lower fire risks with the help of half to 1 inch of rain will be very much appreciated. Highs reach the upper 70s before cooling into the upper 50s and low 60s for lows.
Wednesday morning showers begin to exit from west to east as drier air moves back into the region. Our mountains towards the east will hang on the clouds much of the day but most east of the turnpike will see more sunshine filtering through the thinning clouds for the afternoon. Highs hold back into the mid and upper 70s with cooler northwest winds moving in behind the cold front from Tuesday. By the overnight we’ll continue to clear up allowing for temps to fall back into the 50s.
In your extended forecast, a pattern change is taking shape with our jet stream which will bring a few rainy days our way. While it doesn’t look to elevate our drought overnight, it will be continued relief for fire dangers as we look ahead to the start of our fall fire season October 1st. While it’s too late to save our fall foliage season, which looks to be earlier than normal and shorter overall, it will bring that fall feel to many days as we say goodbye to September.
