    Raleigh County 911 gives update on storm response

    RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — Raleigh County Emergency Services 911 gave a storm response update after weather caused by Tropical Storm Helene swept through the area on Friday, September 27, 2024.

    According to a press release from Raleigh County Emergency Services 911, crews are working on dealing with various emergency situations throughout Raleigh County.

    Raleigh County Emergency Services 911 stated that there are many reported road closures caused by the weather that include:

    • Springdale and Rhodes in Beckley
    • East Prince Street in Beckley
    • Nebraska Avenue and Craig Street in Beckley
    • Hot Coal Road
    Around 219,000 Appalachian Power customers without power across Appalachia

    Members of Raleigh County Emergency Management are working with members of local Law Enforcement, County Fire Departments, Beckley Street Department, and the Division of Highways to help and warn residents about blocked roads and fallen trees.

    According to Raleigh County Emergency Services 911, there are shelters on standby if necessary, however no shelters are open at this time in Raleigh County.

    Members of various fire departments and the Division of Highways were in various parts of Raleigh County removing trees and debris from roadways for the past four hours.

    Bluefield Virginia Police Department advises against travel except in emergency situations

    Raleigh County Emergency Services 911 stated that people should be very careful if they need to travel after dark.

    The Raleigh County 911 Center not only processed over 100 calls for service on Friday, September 27, 2024, they also continue to answer emergency calls.

    More than 70 ‘tree down’ calls were reported, with more coming in due to winds, there are around 114 power outage cases leaving approximately 9,757 residents without power in Raleigh County.

    McDowell County residents advised to stay home during severe weather

    Emergency situations can be reported to the Raleigh County 911 Center, and the Raleigh County 911 Center advised residents to contact their power company for power outage updates.
