Alerts Issued for Our Region
Flood Warning in effect until 3:15 AM for Bland and Tazewell counties.
Flood Warning until 7:45 AM Saturday for Tazewell County.
Flood Warning for Giles County until 9 AM.
Flood Warning continues until Saturday afternoon for the Clinch River near Richlands. The river is forecast to rise just above flood stage tonight and fall below flood stage after midnight.
Flooding Warning for the New River at Glen Lyn affecting Giles, Monroe, Mercer and Summers counties through Sunday evening. Major flooding is expected at Glen Lyn, which is forecast to be six feet above flood stage Saturday night and continue to remain above flood stage until Sunday evening.
Saturday is a mainly quiet weather day. Breezy but partly sunny conditions will be followed by increasing clouds during the afternoon with isolated chances for showers. Wind gusts up to 25 mph are still possible with highs in the mid 70s. Our eyes will be watching the New River above the Bluestone Dam. The New River at Glen Lyn is expected to reach its second highest crest on RECORD Sunday, six feet above flood stage. Flooding below the dam is not expected.
Sunday brings the shower activity back into the picture as Helene’s remnants march back east into the region from Kentucky. Though the low pressure system will move nearly over the region, strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall are NOT expected. Gusts as high as 25 mph are possible, with a quarter to a half inch of rain is expected under generally gloomy mostly cloudy skies.
Monday continues the high risk for light shower activity, as Helene’s remnants continue to spin nearby. We’re not expecting much accumulation, but the gloomy weather will continue, with showers likely and highs in the low 70s. Flooding once again is not expected.
Tuesday yet again is a gloomy day with Helene’s remnants still lingering. A few light showers under mostly cloudy skies are once again expected as high temperatures reach the low 70s. Once again, flooding is not expected.
Wednesday sees a cold front move through the region from west to east, pushing Helene’s remnants away from the area. We’ll see a few isolated showers and it’s a cooler day on the way with high temperatures only in the upper 60s.
Thursday features mostly sunny skies with high pressure in control. This is the beginning of another dry stretch in our region, with a northerly breeze keeping us seasonal with highs in the low to mid 70s.
Friday sees our high pressure system move overhead and then to the east, which will warm us up. We’ll see high temperatures in the mid 70s under mostly sunny skies.
Looking ahead in your extended forecast, we are DRY with upper level ridging once again returning to the two Virginias. We look dry Saturday, Sunday and Monday with mostly sunny skies expected each day and high temperatures in the mid 70s.
