BLUEFIELD, WV (WVNS) – Power is still being restored in some areas, which can make for some chaotic situations.

One of these situations involve stoplights. Some stoplights are still not working due to the power outages.

Dumpsite opened for Bluefield residents seeking a place to dispose of their storm debris

Captain Matthew Pettrey of the Central Fire Station in Bluefield, West Virginia told 59News what to do when you come up to a stoplight that is not working.

“Use the four-way stop sign as the regulations. [The right of way goes to the] first to arrive, they get to go and then the next. So it would be a four-way stop sign,” said Captain Pettrey.

He also urged drivers to not assume somebody coming from a different direction will stop.

More than 70 trees fell across roadways in the city according to Pettrey.

Captain Pettrey added that the power outages have affected how they respond to calls. For houses with stair lifts, they are using generators to effectively navigate the situation. He said they treat all power lines like they are live, in the case they are live.
