FAYETTEVILLE, WV (WVNS) — A new policy in Fayette County requires an adult to accompany middle and elementary school students to school athletic events, Fayette County Schools Superintendent Gary Hough said on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

Hough said that in order to be admitted to athletic events, all students in eighth grade and below are required to be with an adult who is at least 19 years old.

He said they must also wear wristbands.

Hough said the same rule applies for indoor sports like basketball.

“That’s just to identify them, so we know they’re eighth grade and below,” he explained. “They can go to the concession stands by themselves, they can use the restrooms. But they are to be there to watch the ballgame. They’re not there to hang out with friends in another area of the stadium.”

He told 59News, school officials are being pro-active and that the policy is a measure to keep students safe.
