MERCER COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — Dumpsters will be available in parts of Mercer County throughout October for people to dispose of perishable food.

Local agencies gather donations for those affected by Hurricane Helene

According to a post on Greg Puckett – Commissioner – Mercer County, West Virginia’s Facebook page, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2024, people can get rid of perishable food at dumpsters in multiple locations in Mercer County.

At the peak time, we had 37,000 people without power in Mercer County. And so we know that there was going to be a lot of issues with food and refrigerators and freezers and stuff, and getting rid of that is certainly something that’s important to do from the public health standpoint. We don’t want people even risking the problems that could be associated with bad meat or other things in their freezers.

Greg Puckett | Mercer County Commissioner

The places in Mercer County where the dumpsters will be located from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2024 include:

    • Spanishburg School
    • Brushfork School
    • Oakvale School
    • Lashmeet/Matoaka School
    • PikeView School
Pillow Drive held in Mercer County for emergency responders in western North Carolina and Tennessee

The dumpsters will be for food only and everything, such as containers and jars, will need to be bagged. Disposing of food at the dumpsters is free, but there are some rules which include:

    • No household trash
    • No refrigerators
    • No other debris
