West Virginia Fall Fire Ban from October 1st – December 31st

With days on days of dry weather, lower humidity, and falling fall foliage, fire dangers are on the rise. Let alone our drought which won’t seen any relief this week. While West Virginia is the only state in our region with a ban, extreme caution should be taken if deciding to burn. Midday is when our humidity values hit their lowest point. During this time, the chance for fires to spread jumps, especially when a light breeze kicks up like we’ll see throughout each day this week as temps rise and fall. The safest thing to do is simply not burn until some meaningful rain moves in.

Wednesday is a rinse and repeat forecast with blue skies and sunshine. A few fair weather wispy clouds in the afternoon but nothing but something pretty to look at from them is expected. Highs crest into the upper 60s for the lowlands, low 60s for the mountains.

Once again after sunset temps tumble quickly with the 50s by 10pm, 40s by midnight, then we chill to the low 40s for most by pre-dawn. In the mountain top communities (above 2,800ft) patchy frost is expected between 3am to 9am. Sensitive plants will need protection during this time.

Thursday gets another shot of cooler air from the north as another area of high pressure moves in. No rain and very little in the way of clouds keeps the sunshine around but we once again struggle to reach the low to mid 60s. Patchy frost will begin to creep down the mountain sides and into the valleys by the predawn hours of our Friday. Sensitive plants will need moved indoors or covered from 3am to 8am.

Friday is looking fantastic for the Hinton Railroad Days as temps move out of the frost 30s in the morning to the mid and upper 60s by the late afternoon. After sunset, temps fall quickly through the 50s Friday evening and 40s by Friday overnight. A light breeze will make the night feel cooler so pack the sweater for those late evening plans.

Saturday hosts the same patter with sunshine and cool morning chill. Sunshine and westerly winds help move the temps into the 60s by midday, low 70s for most off the mountain tops by the late afternoon. Temps will be a comfortable mid 40s overnight for some great sleeping weather.

Sunday morning is a bit chilly but we warm up nicely with west-southwest winds moving in. We’ll see highs push into the low to mid 70s off the mountains. A few clouds roll in from the west from a weak system approaching from Michigan. No rain is expected Sunday so enjoy the cooler night with temps in the upper 40s.

Monday will be a breezy day with a few passing clouds. An isolated sprinkle to light shower for the ridgelines is possible as a weak system scoots through. The bigger headline to the day will be the cold snap that follows. Temps struggle into the mid 50s, some mountain top communities will fall within the 40s (Snowshoe for example). Widespread frost is likely, even for more urban areas as cold air sinks in for an extended stay.

Tuesday morning, widespread frost is expected area wide until 10am. Sunshine will help warm us up out of the frosty 30s but temps are stuck well below average in the low 50s. Some mountain top communities won’t make it out of the 40s for the day. After sunset, temps tumble quickly with widespread frost again expected with overnight lows in the 30s. Some mountain tops dipping into the upper 20s!

In your extended forecast, fire dangers will be running higher with each passing day without rain. While we do have a weak system Monday next week, it looks less and less likely it will benefit us at all. Our cold snap won’t last very long as we’ll return closer to average by the end of next week with temps nearing the mid and upper 60s.
