Tonight is yet another cold and crisp night on the way with clear skies and temperatures dropping back into the 30s. Numerous Frost Advisories and Freeze Warnings are in effect for tonight. If you have any sensitive flower, plants, or other vegetation, cover them up tonight or bring them inside so they are not damaged or killed. We have a chance at being able to view the Northern Lights out with strong to severe geomagnetic activity taking place tonight – the best chance for viewing this will be before midnight. If you have a few minutes, take a look outside after dark – you could be surprised!
Friday sees our area of high pressure move in from the north down into the area and then south. We’ll begin to see our temperatures rebound quickly after a frosty start in the 30s during the morning hours. Temperatures will climb over thirty degrees into the mid 60s with lots of sunshine expected. I’ll be live at the Bluefield vs. PikeView game for week seven of high school football and anchor Rivers Upchurch will be live for our Chris Grose Chiropractic Game of the Week as Greenbrier West visits James Monroe in Lindside. We’ll have all of the highlights for you coming up Friday night in the Sports Zone during the 11pm newscast!
Saturday continues our slow warming trend, with temperatures expected to be cold in the morning in the low 40s. However, high pressure will shift down to our south and that will bring a southerly breeze back into the area. As a result, we will see high temperatures jump up into the low 70s with mostly sunny skies expected.
Sunday keeps the sunny trend going with plenty of sunshine and highs in the mid 70s. We’ll be watching a cold front approaching late in the day. That could provide a shower or two around dusk but most of the day is dry. With gusty wind at times out ahead of that front along with plenty of sun and warm conditions, we’ll be looking at an increased fire threat. Rain showers will arrive overnight.
Monday features a few scattered showers, with a cold front pushing through but there will be sunshine in between each of those showers. The bigger story will be the cooler weather. Temperatures will struggle mightily to reach the mid 50s in what promises to be our first true taste of chilly weather this fall season.
Tuesday provides mostly cloudy skies with a northwest breeze and a few isolated sprinkles – a few flakes will be possible in the highest peaks above 3,500 feet but no accumulations are expected. Temperatures will be stuck in the 40s for most of the day, and we’ll be lucky to reach 50 degrees in what promises to be a November-like day. Our first widespread freeze is looking increasingly possible Tuesday night into Wednesday as skies clear, with lows dropping down to around 30.
Wednesday is yet another cool day on tap despite plenty of sunshine, with mostly sunny skies expected and highs in the low 50s. Frost will once again be a big threat Wednesday night into Thursday as lows drop into the low to mid 30s.
Thursday sees our temperatures begin to rebound as our wind shifts to coming from the south in the afternoon, which will allow high temperatures to push to near 60 degrees with plenty of sunshine.
Looking ahead in your extended forecast, we begin to see our temperatures rebound with plenty of sunshine expected. High temperatures on Friday will be in the mid 60s, with 70s returning for Saturday into Sunday. We look to remain dry, which is not great news for the fall fire season.
