HINTON, WV (WVNS) – Hinton Railroad Days has it all. They have the music, the food, and the fun for all ages.

Jack Scott, the City of Hinton Mayor said this year’s Railroad Days has brought one of the biggest crowds that he has seen in a while.

Excitement in Hinton builds as Railroad Days is set to roll back into town

This comes as a surprise to him, as the traffic of people that came in to celebrate the railroad are coming by car instead of by train, which is the mode of transportation a lot of people used to come in on in Railroad Days past.

“We are already running into parking situations, but that is a good problem for me to have. We are running a transit bus, and we do have some exterior parking available. So, if you are coming in off of the interstate, you can head into Avis and we have a parking zone up there and we have a transit bus hauling people into town,” said Mayor Scott.

Railroad Days is also a huge boost for Hinton businesses.

Jerry Kirk, the owner of Kirk’s Market, said that he has to call in extra staffing to help his business handle the higher demand for his food and goods.

“We have a lot of customers coming where we are serving chicken and dumplings, fried apple pies, and all that, and people come support us. We are glad they come and try to be social with them,” said Kirk.

Railroad Days is an event that unites people from across the globe. People from different nations and continents were in attendance as well as a special lady who just celebrated her 100th birthday back in March 2024.

100-year-old Opal Wilson grew up right here in West Virginia and was celebrating Railroad Days with her family that currently spans 5 generations. Wilson tells us that her favorite part of Railroad Days was the car show.

“That ’57 Chevy over there is pretty,” said Wilson.

Wilson told 59News the secret to her long life has always been working hard and keeping herself busy.
