Alerts Issued for Our Region
FREEZE WARNING from 2 AM to 10 AM Wednesday for Summers, Mercer, Tazewell, Bland, Giles, and Monroe counties.
FROST ADVISORY from 8 PM tonight to 9 AM Wednesday for McDowell and Wyoming counties.
Tonight features mostly cloudy skies with rain showers switching to snow showers as temperatures drop to around freezing for overnight lows. No snow accumulations are expected except in the high-country spots above 4,000 feet, where as much as an inch or two of snow accumulation is expected. Showers will wane in intensity and coverage shortly after midnight.
Wednesday continues the risk for a light mixed bag of precipitation over the mountains, where clouds will keep temperatures held down into the low 40s and upper 30s for highs, but we should see the rain and snow showers wrap up in the lowlands by the mid-morning. Clouds will be tough to break, with mostly cloudy skies expected. Temperatures are really going to struggle to climb even in the valleys, with highs struggling to reach the mid 40s in what will feel more like December! The deep chill is short-lived, however. We’ll have a cold night with low temperatures in the upper 20s to around 30 degrees and clearing skies. The last time we’ve been that cold was all the way back on April 7th!
Thursday sees our temperatures begin to rebound. A strong high pressure system moving out of Canada into the northern US on Wednesday will move directly over the area on Thursday. This will provide partly to mostly sunny skies and temperatures rebounding into the low 50s. Another frosty night is expected Thursday night into Friday.
Friday will be an even warmer day as high pressure shifts off to our east. As a result, we will pick up a southerly breeze, which will make for a much warmer afternoon with highs in the low to mid 60s. High school football games will be dry with mostly clear skies, but much like last week, those games will be chilly by the end of the fourth quarter, so dress accordingly, as we’ll be back into the mid 40s by the end of area games.
Saturday continues the warming trend with plenty of sunshine expected and highs in the upper 60s as our southerly breeze continues. That’s close to normal for this time of year in terms of high temperatures. For those attending Bridge Day, the weather looks great and the wind will be relaxed for those dare-deviling off the bridge!
Sunday keeps the dry weather pattern continuing, as high pressure continues to sit over the area. This means storm systems will be moving around us, not through us. Mostly sunny skies are expected with highs pushing to near 70.
Monday once again will be dry with temperatures in the low 70s with plenty of sunshine expected.
Tuesday keeps the sunshine around with high pressure in control with highs in the low 70s.
Looking ahead in your extended forecast, our dry pattern will be continuing. This is not good for our drought and fire threats, which are slowly increasing with each dry day. Temperatures will be slightly above normal Wednesday through Friday with highs near 70.
