BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — People in Beckley may spot a flock of colorful “birds,” scattered around town, compliments of BEX artists.

Saja Montague, BEX president, said the “Beckley Birds” public art project began in 2023, when BEX partnered with local artist Nicholas Tankersley to “create something special for the City of Beckley.”

Five of the best Superpowers to have

In a press release, Montague stated that the artist sketched bird designs on six plywood panels and that nearly 45 community members helped to finish the birds during a public painting party.

“It was an absolute pleasure working with the community to bring the Beckley Birds project to life,” Tankersley stated. “My heartfelt thanks to BEX and the City of Beckley.”

Montague said that the program was funded via the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
