FAYETTEVILLE, WV (WVNS) – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

New program hopes to reduce domestic violence in Raleigh County

The AWAY Fayette County Outreach Office gave out their Incite Hope Awards as part of their Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Candlelight Vigil Program.

Recipients include Fayette County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Sarah Smith, Deputy Sheriff Chad Cogar of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, and Fayetteville Police Department Chief Glenn Chapman, who was unable to attend due to prior commitments.

The program was held to remember domestic violence victims and survivors.

“Our agency along with law enforcement [and] the whole judicial system, we are basically their lifeline,” said Belinda Hopkins, the domestic violence victim advocate of the AWAY Fayette County Outreach Office.

They paused for a moment of remembrance as they reflected on some of the tragedies they have encountered over the years.

Hopkins also issued an important reminder.

“[Say,] you see someone with a black eye, if you think it’s safe, ask them, ‘Can I help you? Is there anything I can do to help you?’ Because that person may be in need. They may be fleeing from their abuser. So, if you see something, say something,” said Hopkins.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, Hopkins said to call 911 immediately.

You can get in contact with AWAY and their resources by calling their hotline at (304) 255-2559.
