BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Law enforcement officers and those who work in the court system are often under extreme pressure. Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office Deputy, Colton Bare grew up understanding the dedication.

Deputy Bare was hired in December and recently graduated from the West Virginia State Police Academy.

When he entered law enforcement, he carried on the legacy of his parents.

His father, Capt. Jim Bare, has worked at the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office for decades, as a DUI enforcement officer and a detective.

Judy Bolon Bare, Deputy Bare’s mother, was once a social worker and then worked as a probation officer.

She currently serves as a truancy officer for Raleigh County.

Deputy Bare said his parents, who are divorced, inspired him to enter law enforcement.

“They encouraged me, because they know that this job has a purpose, and that it’s benefiting others. It’s kind of a selfless job to get into, so I think they encouraged me a lot,” said Deputy Bare on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

Judy Bolon Bare said she is proud of her son’s choice.

“He has a good head on his shoulders,” she said. “He’s focused on his career, and his education. I’m glad he’s doing something he’s interested in.”

Capt. Bare said that, as he prepares for retirement, he feels settled about passing the torch.

“Knowing that him and the other guys that we have at the Sheriff’s Office are there to take the reins and go forward, it makes me feel good that those guys are going to be there and he’s one of them.”

Deputy Bare said his parents’ ideals inspired his decision to enter the field.

“I just want to help people. I think that is the number one goal,” said Deputy Bare. “I want to help people and do good for Raleigh County.”
