TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA (WVNS) – A new president is taking the lead at Bluefield University.
Dr. Steven Peterson is the 10th president for the Virginia school.

The inauguration of Peterson coincides with another big event at the school – homecoming and family weekend.

Dr. Peterson was recommended to the B-U board of trustees this June by the Presidential Search Committee. He has experience in leadership, recruitment, advocacy, and student aid – specifically from Liberty University.

On October 16th 2024, the school also unveiled the portrait of former president and chancellor Dr. David Olive.

“Really it was a celebration for the university to appoint their 10th president and for us to move forward into the next chapter. In my address, I talked about a blueprint for the future and the changing needs of higher ED or changing the needs of students and adjusting higher ED to meet the needs – needs of those demands,” Steve Peterson commented.

Dr. Peterson emphasizes connection and encouragement on his first day as Bluefield University President

Craig Stout, the Chair of the President Search Committee said they picked Dr. Peterson because of his work ethic and commitment to higher education.

“We came across a trash can that had been gotten into by um some animals. Before any of us could move to begin the process, Dr. Peterson had already been starting to pick up trash. It was very obvious from the beginning that call to excellence starts from the little simple things,” said Craig Stout, Chair of the President Search Committee.

Dr. Peterson has high hopes for his time as the President of Bluefield University. He wishes students feel comfortable and receive a good education.

“We want to make sure we get the word out that Bluefield University is doing well. It’s a place where we want young people to come and study, and fulfill their dreams of earning a college degree,” Dr. Peterson added.

This event marks a remarkable time for Bluefield University and is sure to be a memorable occasion for all in attendance during the next few days.
