SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) Road rage led to a freeway shooting on I-696 in Oakland County, State Police said.

In a statement on X, Michigan State Police said the Detroit Regional Communication Center received calls of a “possible freeway shooting” on eastbound I-696 near Evergreen on Saturday (8/2) at 10:20 a.m. The caller, 64 of Southfield, said a woman in a black SUV shot his car between Evergreen and Southfield.

Further investigation revealed road rage may be to blame, as a woman riding in the suspect’s vehicle had thrown a blue water bottle at the caller’s car prior to the shooting; according to police.

The suspect's vehicle exited the freeway at Coolidge from eastbound I-696, police said.

A bullet struck the caller’s vehicle, a Ford F-250 Super Duty, once in the passenger side door. Investigators retrieved the bullet.

    No injuries were reported.

The freeway was closed for an evidence search.

If you have any information on the shooting, please call (855) MICH-TIP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak-Up.
