DETROIT (WWJ) — Michigan State Police officials are sending a warning about distracted driving after a 73-year-old Detroit man rear-ended a patrol car while he was eating chicken wings.

The incident happened around 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14 on the southbound Lodge Freeway Service Drive near W. Grand Blvd.

The trooper was stopped in the left center lane for a red light when the driver hit the back of the patrol car.

“Driving distracted, in this case, eating wings, is a risky driving behavior that leads to preventable crashes. Fortunately, no one was hurt in this case,” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on X.

MSP officials said no one was injured and there was only minor damage to the patrol car.

The at-fault driver was given a ticket and released.

“It is important to remember to focus on driving when behind the wheel,” Shaw said.
