General Motors lays off over 1,000 employees in software and services divisions, cutting 600 jobs in Michigan

(WWJ) -- General Motors is cutting over 1,000 jobs in its software and services division across the globe.

WWJ's Jeff Gilbert reports about 600 of the job cuts are expected to be at GM's Global Tech Center in Warren.

In a statement from GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly via The Detroit News , Kelly said the automaker must "simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact" as it looks to the future.

"As a result," Kelly says, "we're reducing certain team within the Software and Services organization. We are grateful to those who have helped establish a strong foundation that positions GM to lead moving forward."

Along with the job cuts in Metro Detroit, other layoffs took place in California, Texas and Canada, among other locations.
