(WWJ) — A Redford man could spend up to five years behind bars for allegedly embezzling thousands of dollars from his own grandfather.

Darius Nance, 33, was arraigned Thursday in Bloomfield Hills District Court on one count of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult – $1,000 or more but less than $20,000, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Friday.

Nance’s grandpa was admitted to the SKLD Bloomfield Hills Nursing Facility in October 2022 and Nace was appointed his grandfather’s guardian the following February.

The AG’s office alleges Nance failed to make any payments to the facility for his grandfather’s care after assuming guardianship.

He also allegedly wrote numerous checks from his grandfather’s account after his admission to the facility, not for his grandfather’s needs, but “his own personal business dealings,” according to Nessel’s office.

The AG’s office did not release any further details about Nance’s business dealings.

"Court-appointed guardians are entrusted with the vital responsibility of protecting our most vulnerable citizens,” Nessel said, per a press release. “My office will continue to hold accountable those who use guardianships to unlawfully enrich themselves.”

The AG’s Health Care Fraud Division handled the investigation.

Nance is due back in court on Sept. 3.
