DETROIT (WWJ) -- Stay inside if you can, and drink lots of water. That's the advice from forecasters calling for dangerously hot temperatures along with some thunderstorms in Metro Detroit on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory , in effect for a the WWJ listening area from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. on August 27 .

The advisory covers the majority of Southeast Michigan — including Wayne, Macomb, Oakland, Genesee, Monroe, Livingston, Saginaw, Shiawassee, Lenawee, Midland and Bay counties.

With the heat index index expected to reach as high as 102 degrees, everyone is urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, stay in an air-conditioned room whenever possible, and check up on relatives and neighbors. The actual high on Tuesday will be around 92 degrees,.

Meanwhile, forecasters are keeping an eye on a line of storms that may turn severe as they roll through our area.

NWS said the biggest risk for the most severe weather Tuesday is between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. And although the rain will be spotty, the main window for severe storms looks to be in the morning and afternoon north of I-69, and in the evening hours for the rest of Southeast Michigan.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Thompson says primary risks with this system include flooding downpours and damaging wind gusts, while the NWS also warns of lightening, a chance for large hail and even an isolated tornado.

Thompson said the risk for a heavy thunderstorm will remain on Wednesday, although it won't be quite as hot, with a high temperature of around 87 degrees.

Looking ahead into the week, Thompson said temperatures will come down a bit more into Thursday and Friday, although it will remain humid, with some more showers and a thunderstorm again a possibility both days. "Although most of the time both days should be rain-free," he said.

As for the good news: AccuWeather is calling for a pleasant Labor Day weekend in Metro Detroit, with highs in to high 70s to early 80s, with lower humidity and plenty of sunshine.
