Ann Arbor man arrested and charged for stealing laptop, other items from home while residents slept inside

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) Police arrested a man accused of stealing items, including a laptop, from at least one home--and using a stolen credit card.

In a statement on Facebook; Ann Arbor Police said they responded to a home invasion on W. William at First, in the area of Huron and Main Street, on Wednesday (9/4) around 5:45 a.m. That’s only half a mile away from the University of Michigan campus.

Preliminary investigation revealed an unknown suspect entered the home through an unlocked door while everyone inside slept. The residents told officers they woke up and noticed “several items missing,” police said.

One of the items missing was a laptop, pinging at a home on Packard Street, less than a quarter of a mile away from the original crime scene.

The investigation ultimately led officers to a nearby gas station, where surveillance video showed the suspect using a stolen credit card; according to police.

Police said officers found a car near the Packard location, with the items stolen from the W. William house “in plain view” inside. Officers searched the car and the Packard home, with a warrant. Inside the house, they found “several” more items stolen from the house on W. William—and property belonging to other possible victims.

Officers arrested Javare Holmes, 29 of Ann Arbor, at the Packard house. He was charged on Thursday with home invasion first degree, receiving and concealing stolen property $1,000 or more but less than $20,000, and two counts of stealing a financial transaction device without consent. Holmes was given a $75,000 cash/surety bond and remains lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail.

Ann Arbor Police are urging all residents to lock their doors and windows, and to call 911 if they see any suspicious activity.
