Helpful resources, community services are available for older adults in Metro Detroit — Here's where to look

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- A group of local civic leaders gathered Monday at public forum for senior citizens, providing information and links to helpful services.

WWJ's Tim Pamplin reports older Metro Detroiters were invited on Monday to attend a Southfield Senior Summit to learn about resources for older adults in our area.

Over 30 organizations were onsite to provide community info to attendees during the event, hosted by State Sen. Jeremy Moss, when wrapped up at 3 p.m. at the Southfield Pavilion on Evergreen Rd.

The Wayne Health Mobile Unit provided health screenings, COVID-19 PCR testing, vaccinations and information about available care and community services. Narcan training was available from Healing Heart Safety Services, and flu shots through the Oakland County Health Department.

"These are the people that raised us," said Jim Ellison, Oakland County's Chief of Older Adult Services. "We owe it to them to help them now."

Ellison told Pamplin that the top two concerns he hears about are transportation and loneliness.

"Oh, loneliness is an issue," Ellison said. "We've got a hotline that comes into my office, and I've a couple times taken calls from people who really don't have an issue, they just wanna talk."
