Northern Michigan man accused of threatening woman with shotgun, taking her phone so she couldn't call 911

ONEKAMA, Mich. (WWJ) — A Northern Michigan man is behind bars after allegedly threatening a woman with a shotgun and taking her phone away so she couldn’t call the police.

James Michael McNamara of Kalkaska was arraigned on multiple charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon, stemming from an incident on Sept. 3, Michigan State Police officials announced this week.

MSP troopers from the Cadillac Post were called to a home in Onekama — about 13 miles north of Manistee — around 8:45 p.m. that Tuesday after getting reports of an alleged assault.

Responding troopers spoke with a woman who had fled the scene and called 911 from a neighbor’s home. She told troopers she had gotten into an argument with the 39-year-old McNamara.

During the argument, McNamara allegedly assaulted her, threatened her with a shotgun and took her phone so she couldn’t call 911.

While McNamara had initially fled the scene, he returned to the home while troopers were still at the scene and he was taken into custody.

The victim refused treatment by EMS.

McNamara has been charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and one count of interfering with an electronic communication device.

His bond was set at $150,000 and his next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 25.
