ALLEN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) State Police are investigating a pedestrian crash in Hillsdale County that killed a toddler girl who slipped out of her home after her parents put her to bed, police said.

According to a statement on X , Michigan State Police First District said they were called to the scene for a car versus pedestrian crash in Allen Township on Friday around 8:20 p.m. When they arrived to the home on Chicago (M-49) at Railroad Street, they found the 2-year-old girl lying in the road.

A first responder and troopers performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived on scene and took over medical treatment. They rushed her to Hillsdale Hospital where she died from her injuries.

Preliminary investigation revealed her parents put her to bed inside the home. While the parents were “working around the home”; the child crawled out of her bed, left the house and walked onto Chicago Street. A 2012 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a 38-year-old Allen man, struck the child—State Police said.

According to Google Maps, the area is both residential and commercial with a speed limit of 45 miles per hour. Allen Township is about 40 miles southwest of Jackson.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash. Police did not indicate whether or not the driver is fully cooperating in the investigation. An autopsy will be performed on the child, according to State Police.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Michigan State Police Jackson Post at (517) 780-4580.
