REDFORD TWP. (WWJ) -- Police in Wayne County's Redford Township are investigating a shooting that sent a teenager to the hospital Tuesday night.

According to Redford Township Police, a 13-year-old girl was shot at around 7 p.m. on Sept. 17, at home on Lexington, near W. 8 Mile Rd. — and her stepfather was taken into custody.

Chief Jen Mansfield told reporters there was an assault in the home involving two adults, when the man involved drew a handgun. "And when a shot was fired, it did, in fact, accidentally hit the juvenile," she said.

After the shooting, Mansfield said the gunman took off on foot.

"So, he did, in fact, flee from officers," Mansfield said. "We apprehended him; he is in custody. We did, in fact, recover two handguns in the area of which he was apprehended."

The victim was taken by family members to a local hospital for treatment. While Mansfield did not have any updated information about the victim's condition, Wednesday afternoon, she did say the teen is expected to survive.

Mansfield said this was not a domestic dispute, but did not further elaborate as the the circumstance leading up to the gunfire.

The chief said her department is in the process of finishing up an investigation, and the incident report and warrant request will be sent down to the Wayne County Prosecutors Office Wednesday afternoon.

    No names have been released.
